The Soldier - A poem by Rupert Brooke. About the poem - This poem written in 1914 is considered to be an English nationalist poem. It glorifies the heroism of the English soldiers who fought hard in World War One. This poem is pointing out that war is not always started for the reasons that your government tells you; there is a larger picture to consider. About the poet - Rupert Brooke (3 August 1887 – 23 April 1915) was an English poet. He was born in Rugby, Warwickshire in England. He was famous for his idealistic war sonnets written during the First World War, especially "The Soldier".
