About the poem - It is perhaps one of the most well-known poems pertaining to early death; in this case, that of a young man at the height of his physical glory. Published in the period between the two Boer Wars, the poem gained even more popularity during World War I, as many saw it as a poignant lament for the lost generation of so many bright, young men, cut down in their prime. About the poet - Alfred Edward Housman (26 March 1859 – 30 April 1936), famously known as A. E. Housman, was an English classical scholar and poet. He was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, UK. Housman was counted one of the foremost classicists of his age, and has been ranked as one of the greatest scholars of all time.
