Leaning Into The Afternoons - A poem by Pablo Neruda. About the poem - In ‘Leaning into the Afternoons’ lover is compared to the ocean – impenetrable, changeable and mysterious. Like a lonely and melancholic fisherman, the speaker “casts” his “sad nets” out to her “oceanic eyes”. The diction of “sad” and the echoing of the “s” sound, introduced in “casts”, depict the futility of the persona’s attempt to reach out to his lover. Paradoxically, the “oceanic eyes” are then compared to a “fire”. It is in its centre that the persona experiences his most extreme loneliness. About the poet - Pablo Neruda (1904 – 1973) was the pen name and, later, legal name of the Chilean poet, diplomat and politician Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. He was born in Parral, Chile. He covered variety of areas in his writing such as love poems, surrealist poems, historical epics and political manifestos.
