I Shall Forget You Presently, My Dear – A poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay. About the poem - The cavalier attitude prominent in Edna St. Vincent Millay's works is clearly seen in the poem "I shall forget you presently, my dear" which presents the woman as player in the love game no less than the man and frankly accepting biological impulses in love affairs. Overall the poem contrasts the romantic view of love (two people who pair for life) with what actually happens in the animal kingdom (breeding pairs stay together long enough to mate and raise their young, but no longer). About the poet - Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892 – 1950) was an American lyrical poet, playwright and feminist. She was born in Rockland, Maine, USA. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923, the third woman to win the award for poetry, and was also known for her activism and her many love affairs. She used the pseudonym Nancy Boyd for her prose work.
