The Second Coming – A poem by William Butler Yeats. About the poem - The speaker of the poem is someone capable of seeing things that no one else can see. He is a poet-prophet of sorts. While Europe was setting out to rebuild itself after the Great War had ended, this speaker is saying, "Wait a minute, not so fast. We need to look at what kind of world we’ve left ourselves with, and what it might mean for the future." Obviously, the speaker is deeply pessimistic. About the poet - William Butler Yeats (1865 – 1939) was an Irish poet and playwright, and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. He was born in Dublin, Ireland. Yeats was considered as the Master of symbolism. In 1923, he was awarded with the Nobel Prize in Literature.
