God's Grandeur - A poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins. About the poem - This poem is an Italian sonnet—it contains fourteen lines divided into an octave and a sestet, which are separated by a shift in the argumentative direction of the poem. The meter here is not the “sprung rhythm” for which Hopkins is so famous, but it does vary somewhat from the iambic pentameter lines of the conventional sonnet. About the poet - Gerard Manley Hopkins (28 July 1844 – 8 June 1889) was an English poet, Roman Catholic convert, and Jesuit priest. He was born in Stratford, Essex near London. His work became famous posthumously placing him among the leading Victorian poets. His experimental explorations in prosody (especially sprung rhythm) and his use of imagery was the unique feature of his poetic works which enabled him outperform his contemporaries.
