Police militarization in Ferguson Missouri: MRAPs, LRADs seen at Michael Brown shooting protests
  • 9 years ago
Local police in Ferguson, Missouri, have used military gear against protesters following the shooting of Michael Brown.

Officers in Ferguson have been seen carrying rifles based on the military M4 carbine and wearing camouflage along with night vision glasses and gas masks, along with extra magazines and pistols, while some have been spotted sporting Marine Corp Ka-Bar fighting knives.

Military vehicles are also present at the protests, including the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected trucks, or MRAPS, and the Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD.

Public denunciation of the police response to the protests in Ferguson has prompted the Obama administration to order a review of the practice of supplying to local police surplus military equipment from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The New York Times reported that during Obama’s time in office, “police departments throughout the U.S. received tens of thousands of machine guns; nearly 200,000 ammunition magazines; thousands of pieces of camouflage and night-vision equipment; and hundreds of silencers, armored cars and aircraft.”
