UK reconsiders use of MRAPs armoured vehicle in wake of three deaths

The British government is reviewing its use of one model of Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, or MRAP, after three soldiers were killed by an IED in Afghanistan this week while inside one of the vehicles.

The soldiers are the first to die while inside a Mastiff MRAP. But Military analysts say the vehicles have saved many lives.

The MRAP family of heavily armoured vehicles is designed to protect soldiers from explosive blasts. Some models weigh more than two tonnes, much heavier than British Land Rovers and the Humvees used by the United States.

This animation introduces some of the protective features of these vehicles.
