Houses and buildings are submerged in floodwaters after days of torrential rain. This is a scene many wouldn't expect to see in Australia, a country known for droughts and soaring temperatures. But parts of northeastern Australia are now experiencing the worst floods in recent memory. We go to our correspondent John Dowie who is in the region for an update.
How are the floods affecting people in the state?
So can you talk about the response from the local government? What's being done to bring the situation under control?
And Australia's Prime Minister, Julia Gillard is getting involved now. Can you fill us in on what her office is doing?

Summer has arrived in Australia and the rain has come with it. Rain started falling on December 18 and it certainly hasn't eased up. There is no immediate end in sight to the flooding; the weather bureau is warning rivers in some areas will remain high for another week, although forecasters predict the weather will clear over the next 48 hours.
How are the floods affecting people in the state?

Well thousands are being evacuated across the state as we speak. The areas of Theodore, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Chinchilla, Condamine, Dalby and Emerald are some of the hardest hit. Some residents are being evacuated by boat and others airlifted by helicopter. Many evacuees spent the night in makeshift shelters and some families will spend many more nights there waiting for the waters recede and the clean up to begin.
