Surah Al-'Alaq (Arabic: العلق, "Blood Clot") is the 96th surah in the Qur'an. This surah consists of 19 verses and belongs to the Makkiyah surahs. Verses 1 through 5 of these surahs are the first verses of the Koran to be revealed, namely when the Prophet Muhammad contemplated in the cave of Hira. This surah is called Al 'Alaq (blood clot), taken from the words of Alaq contained in paragraph 2 of this letter. This letter is also called Iqra 'or Al-Qalam.
