Kurt Atterberg lies among Sweden’s most prolific symphonists. His works were initially praised, yet with time obscured for its simplicity and straightforward romantic language. His Sixth Symphony “the Dollar” is likely one of the most known – and most expensive – musical jokes of all time. The work is quite a rebellious reaction to the musical contest it was written, a celebration of Schubert’s 100th Death Anniversary; one that is highly original, inventive and humoristic which eventually landed 1st prize for Atterberg, whence its nickname.
Kurt Atterberg yace entre los sinfonistas suecos más prolíficos. Sus obras fueron inicialmente alabadas, pero más tarde olvidadas por su simpleza y lenguaje altamente romántico. Su Sexta Sinfonía “Dólar” es quizás una de las más célebres – y más caras – bromas musicales de todos los tiempos. La obra es una reacción rebelde al concurso musical para el que fue escrita, una celebración del centenario luctuoso de Schubert; una bastante original, ingeniosa y humorística, misma que le hizo ganar el 1º lugar y el apodo a la sinfonía.
