Police officer at center of unrest in Ferguson, Missouri resigns

Officer Darren Wilson who shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, has handed in his letter of resignation, his attorney said on Saturday.

The resignation was "effective immediately."

Violent protests erupted in the city of Ferguson, Missouri where the 18-year-old Brown was shot and killed this summer. More riots broke out after a grand jury decided not to indict officer Wilson earlier this week.

Mr. Wilson said in a statement that while he would have liked to continue working as a police officer, his decision to step down was for the safety of the community and of the police force.
