Police Shooting Of Kajieme Powell In Ferguson Missouri

  • hace 10 años
The St. Louis Police Department released a cell phone video recording of an event that left 25-year-old Kajieme Powell dead at the hands of responding police officers.
According to the narrator/cameraman, a person (presumably Powell) had stolen two sodas from a nearby store. He was caught by the man in the red hat and shirt, presumably, and was detained until police arrived.
The person in the video that is supposedly Powell, set the sodas down and paced around grumbling about being "tired of it," and telling people to stay away from him.
A police SUV arrives and two officers get out and the driver draws his pistol. Powell has his hands in his pockets, and approaches the police vehicle aggressively. The police tell him to remove his hands from his pockets and he complies while walking toward the police vehicle and shouting "Shoot me!"
It now appears Powell is holding a weapon, as the police begin instructing him to drop the knife. The knife cannot be seen in the video because of the low visual quality.
Powell shouts, "Shoot me now, (expletive), and looks back as if he realizes his actions are endangering those behind him because he is aligning them with the policemen's point of aim. He works his way left and continues to approach the police, not complying with the instructions. A witness yells, "Drop it, bro!" At that point the police open fire with at least a dozen shots at close range.
Powell falls immediately to the ground. He makes some movements, but is dead within seconds.
The narrator says, "Here we go again," referring to the recent police shooting of an unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown in the same town, Ferguson, MO on 9 August.
The last police shooting sparked demonstrations, riots and looting, eventually causing the National Guard to be called in to stabilize the violence.
St Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson defended his officers' killing of Powell, saying that they were justified on the grounds of self-defense.
