Hundreds of migrants have been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Thousands of people have been rescued this year in the Mediterranean sea while trying to reach the Italian coast and Europe.

Most migrants attempt the crossing packed into narrow, open wooden boats that sometimes take weeks to make the dangerous voyages.

Ninety percent of migrants currently in Italy are thought to have come from Libya.
