Hundreds rescued off Italian coast

These are just one boat load of the hundreds of migrants Italy's navy and coast guard say they rescued from the seas around Sicily in a single 24-hour period.

Navy vessels intercepted three dingies each packed with more than 90 people.

Coastguard patrols picked up another 218 aboard an 18-metre boat that ran into trouble.

Italy's a major gateway into Europe for migrants whose arrival by sea tripled in 2013 from the year before.

Numbers have been driven up by Syria's civil war and conflict in the Horn of Africa.
