Chinese Become World’s Biggest Red Wine Drinkers

Red wine consumption in China has been on the rise since 2008, and in 2013 finally eclipsed all other countries and became the world’s quaffing leader.

Also contributing to their title taking is that red wine drinking in France and Italy, now the 2nd and 3rd place countries respectively, has dropped off over the years.

Some assert that the boom has more to do with Chinese beliefs than it does their taste buds.

A representative of Vinexpo, the Bordeaux commerce association behind the findings, explained,
"Red is a very positive colour in Chinese culture and is synonymous with wealth, power and luck.
In the business world these three values are fundamental, therefore red wine is often found in banquets to seal partnerships. And red is also the colour of China."

Further, competition from the white variety is a non-issue, as white is associated with death and mourning and therefore not considered as appropriate for many occasions.

So, where is all that wine coming from?

Much of it is made in China itself and it’s expected that the country will soon pull ahead of France in terms of production.
