Thousands march in Chile for gay rights
Thousands march in Santiago to promote equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Chileans.

They are also demanding legislation reform to allow same sex couples to marry.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) DEMONSTRATOR, NATALIA CONTRERAS, SAYING:

"Here in this country, unfortunately there is a lot of discrimination for sexual issues, at universities, work and everywhere really."

The government is looking at a bill that would ease restrictions for unmarried couples who live together, whether gay or straight, to access joint bank accounts, health insurance and pension plans should a member of the couple die.

The march is the 13th annual parade staged in the traditionally Catholic country.

Argentina is the only Latin American country that grants same-sex couples full marriage rights, although parts of Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay allow gay couples to have civil unions.
