Germany: Baby giraffe delights Berlin zoo visitors

Newborn giraffe Eric was shown to visitors of Berlin's Tierpark zoo for the first time on Friday. Under the watchful eye of his mother Lotti, the baby giraffe made his first gangly steps in front of onlookers while continuing to learn the ins and outs of life as the tallest animal in the world.

Eric is Lotti's seventh child, known as a calf. Born March 21, he was already 177 centimetres tall at birth. In less than a month he's already sprouted to a height of around 190 centimetres.

Eric is a Rothschild's giraffe, an endangered sub-species of giraffe, with only about 240 surviving individuals in the wild, all of whom live in Uganda's Murchison Falls National Park. Living up to 25 years in the wild, they can reach a height of around 5.5 metres. With the birth of Eric, ten Rothschild's giraffes now call the Berlin Tierpark home.
