Yulin Dog Meat Festival Protest, Guanxi, China, June 2012.

Ms Du Yufeng, founder of Bo'ai Animal Protection Centre and her team were a central part of the protest against dog meat at Yulin Dog Meat festival, Guangxi, Southern China in June 2012.

Using their own money to travel to Guangxi, and using some of Animals Asia Foundation (AAF)'s promotional materials and banners made by local animal lovers, they gathered a lot of publicity on the trip. Speaking on a microphone to the grocery shopping public and pedestrians, they appealed to them, saying "Friends, for the sake of your children's and families health, please do not eat cat and dog meat" Du spoke in tears to tell them that "The dog has accompanied mankind for 1400 years, they are not only human companion animals, they are loyal, they guard our homes and protect our families and protect the country".

The protest caused several traffic jams and 2 reporters filmed everything. The now famous photo of Chinese artist Pian Shan Kong kneeling in front of live and dead dogs asking their forgiveness, happened at the same time as Du's protest while she was on her microphone delivering her educational speech and her team were busy distributing flyers, explaining why people should not eat dog and cat meat.

Ms Du continues to educate people, asking them not to participate in the dog and cat meat trade, while rescuing dogs and closing down slaughterhouses and restaurants serving it. She is running out of space for the rescued dogs and fears she may not be able to take more in as time goes by. We have set up donation facilities and ask that everyone find it in their hearts to help her continue her work. We can all afford $1 and if everyone donated that, we would have hundreds for her to begin building her new shelter on land she has already leased. Please help.
