Surreal Underground View of New York City

Check out the surreal underground view of New York City.

One hundred and fifty feet below Grand Central Terminal, a massive construction project is in process on the nation’s largest mass transit system. A new commuter system, known as the "East Side Access" project, will allow better access to the East Side of Manhattan to thousands of Long Island Rail Road customers.

Unbeknownst to most New Yorkers walking down Park Avenue, two tunnel boring machines have been carving out 32,000 linear feet of new tunnels.

In order to make sure that no buildings above were disturbed, crews had to freeze the ground to negative 20 degrees prior to the tunnel boring. This was done by pouring a special chemical into the ground and then cooled to the correct temperature by a refrigeration plant.

Service on the new transit line is expected to start in late 2016.

While the New York City's underground may seem fascinating and worth exploring, just remember you'll find a lot more than you'd expect.

There are an estimated 70 million rats that populate New York City above and below the ground.
