Tiananmen Activist Urges US Action on Forced Organ Harvesting in China

One activist from the Tiananmen Square protests of ’89 is urging the United States to reveal what it knows about the allegations of forced organ harvesting in China. Wang Dan, who lives in Taiwan, says the political fractures within the Communist Party means it may be easier for the US to press for information.

Rights groups have accused the Chinese regime of harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience. Most of the suspected victims are practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. Disgraced communist official Bo Xilai and his former police chief Wang Lijun are identified as the key people behind forced organ harvesting.

During a panel discussion about human rights in China on Tuesday, Wang Dan said the US should take action.

[Wang Dan, Chinese Democracy Activist]:
“We hope that with Bo Xilai’s downfall, more information about forced organ harvesting can be exposed. I feel the United States has a responsibility to press the Chinese government for more information. I think it will meet with less resistance now than before.”

After Chongqing’s former police chief Wang Lijun fled to a US Consulate in February, rumors surfaced he had handed information about organ harvesting to US officials. In July, during a press briefing after the US-China human rights dialogue, Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner did not confirm nor deny a question relating to those claims.

Legal researcher Dr. Fort Fu-te Liao says if the US does have information, it should reveal them.

[Dr. Fort Fute Liao, Legal Researcher]:
“If the US government has obtained, directly or indirectly, information on live organ harvesting, it really needs to, after verifying the information, announce it to the world. It cannot only consider economic interest when dealing with China, but also human rights as well.”

Witnesses have told a US congressional hearing in September that as many as 60,000 Falun Gong practitioners may have been killed by the Chinese regime through forced organ harvesting. Congressman Dana Rohrabacher said at the time the allegations were “monstrous crimes” against humanity.
