Bad Tempered Elephant Patrols The Roads

This elephant likes to play rough – but not just with the rest of the herd, or even local villagers.

No – this Cambodian Bull elephant likes to play with cars, trucks, and anything else that happens to travel down National Road 48.

And when he isn't charging at vehicles, he enjoys destroying buildings and crops, and has even injured cattle.

Not surprisingly, villagers in the Koh Kong province have had enough.

At the end of August a three-day operation was launched to locate the elephant and move him to a zoo near the capital.

[Nick Mark, Director of Wildlife Alliance]:
"He's caused a lot of problem along the National Road 48, caused several car crashes and he's been making inroads into the sugar cane plantation. Local people are kind of upset, a little angry. Although they all love him, they're kind of angry. If we don't capture him then he will cause trouble and ultimately will probably be killed himself.”

Luckily, the bad tempered elephant, known as Sakor, is going to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre.

Here he can splash in the water with the other rescued elephants, and may even one day get to be a dad.
