Police seize counterfeit dollar bills

Peruvian authorities raided a building in downtown Lima and seized 2.3 million U.S. dollars in counterfeit 50 dollar bills.

Police chief said the notorious Quispe Rodriguez family gang is behind it.

He also added that authorities have been following the same gang for some time.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) POLICE CHIEF, SEGUNDO PORTOCARRERO, SAYING:

"Last year, we seized approximately 5 million dollars and 2 million euros from this same gang. This year so far, we have already seized 5 million dollars and 1.6 million euros."

According to authorities, the counterfeit bills were headed to Argentina and Venezuela.
