Pop quiz - what shape is a watermelon? Round, ofcourse. But you may not be aware that in Japan there are squared watermelons as well.

Try storing a round watermelon in a refrigerator and it's just so cumbersome. A square watermelon is much more graceful when sitting on a refrigerator shelf. It's quite ingenious.

And surprisingly, the technique to make them square is not that complicated. While the fruit is growing, it's placed inside a glass case. The privilege to eat this square beauty does come at a hefty price though - they can cost as much as over $75.

If you don't want to damage your pocket too much, you can even grow your own with a few instructions. And why just stop at watermelons - could any fruit be square? How about oranges? Apples? Pineapple?

By the way, did you know there are over a 1000 watermelon varieties? A Carolina Cross watermelon can weight as much as 200 pounds.
Another fun tid-bit, Oklahoma declared watermelon as its official state vegetable in 2007. The announcement sparked a big debate as most consider it to be a fruit.
