Cavalleria Rusticana, Mélodrame en un acte de Pietro Mascagni créé en 1890 et Pagliacci, opéra en deux actes créé par Ruggero Leoncavallo créé en 1892.

La réunion de ces deux opéras marque la naissance de l’école qui inventa l’opéra de l’après-Verdi. Violeta Urmana, Marcello Giordani, Inva Mula et Vladimir Galouzine s’aiment, se haïssent et se tuent au grand soleil du Sud.
