Expedition Suriname: Climbing the Van der Wijck Top

Dr. Russ Mittermeier, primatologist and president of Conservation International, put together an expedition team to reach an unexplored corner of South America's Amazon basin. After 35 years of exploring forests in Suriname, Mittermeier is back in this green country attempting to climb a never before explored granite mountain deep inside the Central Suriname Nature Reserve.
This one-week-long expedition was no easy task. Hiking 10km daily through untouched native forest, portaging boats and bypassing fast river rapids, discovering a possible new pre-columbian archaeological site, all culminating with the exhilarating climb to the top of the Van der Wijck, a mountain that Mittermeier says no human being had climbed in recorded history.
