Dalai Lama Leads Prayers for Self-Immolators

On Wednesday, the Dalai Lama held a service in Dharamsala to mourn nine Tibetans who had set themselves on fire to protest Chinese Communist Party rule. The Chinese regime responded by accusing the Dalai Lama of supporting "terrorist behavior." Activities commemorating the monks also took place in New Delhi and in Taipei.
On October 19th the Dalai Lama fasted and led Tibetans in prayer in Northern India's Dharamsala, where he lives in exile. The service commemorated nine Tibetans who had set themselves on fire to protest Chinese Communist Party rule.
The Tibetan government in exile in Dharamsala, is calling on the Chinese regime to start honoring Tibetan's human rights.
[Kelsang Gyaltsen, Member of Tibetan Parliament in Exile]:
"The first point is that we call on the People's Republic of China to respect Tibetan's fundamental human rights and actual religious freedom. Secondly we urge the People's Republic of China to investigate its tough military policy in Tibet. We demand they accord with Tibetan's wishes, and truly conform to the policy of a harmonious society."
The Chinese regime responded by accusing the Dalai Lama of supporting "terrorist behavior." Yet Tibetans point out these self-immolation cases arise because of the desperate situation in Tibet.
[Karma Choephel, Former Member, Tibetan Parliament in Exile]:
"Since March this year (2011), in Tibet many young monks and young people, they have started committing self-immolation which is also termed as 'aatma daah.' So the situation in Tibet is not good. Therefore (we want) to tell the world, how the situation in Tibet is—that there's no freedom, no human rights, no religious freedom."
