Sea Horses - Birch Aquarium

Birch Aquarium - Sea Horses - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Seahorses are very whimsical animals and they are beloved by many people who love anything in the ocean. They look like a horse, but they act like a chameleon. They have a tail like a monkey. They are really fun to look at. They are also really delicate animals. These animals live in the coast, in the shallow coastal system, so they are really in danger of anything to do with coastal destruction or pollution - anything that effects our coast. So it is really important for communities that live near the populations of seahorses to be aware of that and to help protect the coasts. Seahorses are varied species. They can be extremely tiny, the dwarf seahorses are no bigger than your fingernail, all the way up to the giant Pacific seahorses, which are almost a foot high. Seahorse daddies are the only ones that carry and give birth. And this is really exciting for us, always, to watch because the female comes over to the male and deposits eggs into a little a pouch that he has. Then he fertilizes the eggs and then keeps them inside. And then when they are ready to be born, he gives birth.
