Liza Minnelli rang the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday, to mark World AIDS Day.

Although it's not the first time the star had rung the Stock Exchange bell, Minnelli says this occasion was special.

[Liza Minnelli, Entertainer]:
"I've rung it once before but this is different. This is for amfAR and I'm with Kenneth."

Minnelli, a longtime supporter of The Foundation for AIDS Research or amfAR, was joined by fashion designer and amFAR Chairman Kenneth Cole.

Minnelli says World AIDS Day on December 1st was a timely reminder of the enormous challenge faced by millions of AIDS sufferers around the globe.

[Liza Minnelli, Entertainer]:
"Every once in a while I sense that people in America think, 'well, it's cured, it's fixed, they've stopped it'. They haven't. Not yet. It's better, but not yet. So we've still got to keep on fighting - and all over the world it's worse. Look at Brazil. It's really; it's something we have to make people aware of that it's not over. This goes on and on and eventually we will stop it, but we need your help."

Founded in 1985, amfAR is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research.

On average, it takes 10 years for a person infected with HIV to develop AIDS if he or she is not treated.

Globally, more than 33 million people are infected with HIV, 22.5 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the United Nations.
