12-Year-Old Chinese Chess Player Competes at Asian Games

The 16th Asian Games are underway in Guangzhou, China. The youngest competitor at the Games is just 12 years old. She's a Taiwanese girl playing Xiangqi, sometimes called Chinese Chess. She traveled abroad for the first time to compete in the tournament.
Peng Jou-an from Taizhong in central Taiwan is just 12 years old. She's the youngest competitor at this year's Asian Games in Guangzhou, China and Taiwan's youngest ever Xiangqi champion. Xiangqi is a Chinese board game similar to Chess.
Peng went through months of intensive training to prepare for the tournament. She has already beaten one opponent and lost to one other in the first four days of play at the Asian Games. Her coach says she's coping well.
[Lin Yee-shih, Coach]:
"This is her first international game, and it is also her first time to go abroad, so it must be overwhelming for her. She is doing ok. She is very young. She has been doing well enough."
Peng tells how she's doing.
[Peng Jou-an, Xiangqi Player]:
"I was a bit nervous at first, but I am fine now. I think I am doing OK. I really haven't thought about the results. I will just do my best."
Before the games Peng invited Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou for a game of Xiangqi, but he turned down the offer and suggested she train him instead.
The Asian games run from November 12th to the 27th. Other Chinese sports there include Dragon Boat Racing and Wushu.
