Cameron backs GB hosting major sports events

Prime Minister David Cameron has said he is "100 per cent behind" Britain hosting major sporting events, as he met stars of tennis's ATP World Tour Finals, taking place in London next week.

Mr Cameron said the staging of the end-of-season event, which brings together the world's top eight male players, at the O2 arena was "great for London and great for the country".

He met Britain's top player and world number five Andy Murray and world number one Rafael Nadal, along with Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer and Robin Soderling at 10 Downing Street.

Mr Cameron said: "It's fantastic that the ATP World Tour Finals tournament is back in London for the second year running. It's great for London and great for the country.

"I am 100 per cent behind Britain hosting high profile sporting events such as this. With the Olympics, the Rugby Union and Rugby League World Cups, the Cricket World Cup and hopefully the Fifa World Cup all taking place here over the next few years, this is an exciting time for sport in the UK and a great opportunity to build a tremendous sporting legacy.

"I hope that seeing the world's top players compete right on our doorstep, including Britain's very own Andy Murray, will inspire our next generation of sporting heroes."
