he annual fusion of music and spectacle at Stockholm's famous Skansen open-air museum is a tranquil way to greet the New Year - visitors can listen to Tennyson's Ring Out Wild Bells being read aloud on the stroke of midnight.

Every New Year's Eve since 1895, Tennyson's moving ode has been recited at the museum by a well-known Swede. There's also music and, of course, fireworks to entertain the crowd at the end of the night.

If you go for this family event, it could also be your chance to appear on national television - households across Sweden watch a live broadcast of events at Skansen as they toast the New Year from the warmth of their homes.
