Le Festival international de musique pop de Monterey (Monterey International Pop Music Festival) s'est déroulé du 16 au 18 juin 1967 à Monterey, en Californie.
Tous les artistes ont joué gratuitement, les recettes du festival ayant été reversées à des œuvres de charité. Plus de 200 000 personnes ont participé au festival de Monterey, généralement considéré comme le début du « Summer of Love » (été de l'amour).
C'est à l'occasion de cette manifestation que Jimi Hendrix et The Who ont joué pour la première fois aux États-Unis et que le grand public a découvert des artistes tels que Janis Joplin et Otis Redding. Le festival de Monterey a été le premier grand festival de rock. Il a servi de modèle à des manifestations telles que le festival de Woodstock.
Ravi Shankar's appearance at the Monterey International Pop Festival marked a highpoint in the popularity of Indian classical music in the West, during a period when rock groups such as the Beatles, the Byrds and the Rolling Stones had increasingly adopted aspects of the genre in their work. Adding to Shankar's own standing among Western youth, he had achieved fame for his role as sitar teacher to George Harrison, the Beatles' lead guitarist.
The festival was Shankar's first performance at a rock event, as well as the first event to combine the diverse elements of contemporary popular music to folk traditionnal music of india in a festival experience.
