Jesse Stafford & His Orchestra - Cinderella Blues (1928)

  • hace 5 meses
"Cinderella Blues" was written by Norman Spencer and Herb Wiedoeft.

There are two related versions of "Cinderella Blues"--that is, two versions using the same West Coast musicians (more or less). It's easy to get confused.

It helps if you know the history of Herb Wiedoeft's Cinderella Roof Orchestra. That ensemble recorded "Cinderella Blues" during the acoustic era.

But when Herb himself died, Jesse Stafford took over the leadership of the musical group, and at that point an electric version was recorded.

We are hearing the Jesse Stafford version on Brunswick 4048. In other words, we are hearing the later version, not the early one.

This version was recorded on Sept. 6, 1928.

Herb Wiedoeft, a fine trumpet player, was born in Germany on November 22, 1886. When he was a child, he immigrated with his parents to America. He died tragically on May 12, 1928, due to a car accident in Medford, Oregon. His car skidded off the Medford-Klamath Falls highway.

Before his early death, he led some of the finest West Coast musicians providing dance music in the Roaring 1920s.

Herb was the brother of saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft. Another brother (Adolph Wiedoeft or "Ad") was a skilled musician--he played drums and xylophone. And there was one other (nicknamed "Gay").

Herb was a pioneering Los Angeles band leader. The band took its odd name from the Cinderella Roof at the Biltmore Hotel, located in Los Angeles at 506 South Grand Avenue (Sixth and Olive downtown).

The musicians made Brunswick recordings. The first record featured "Cinderella Blues" backed by "Shine."

Various names were used on labels, such as Herb Wiedoeft and his Orchestra and Herb Wiedoeft’s Famous Orchestra.

After Wiedoeft’s death, the group carried on. Trombonist Jesse Stafford took over the band and released another 13 sides on Brunswick records under the name of the Jessie Stafford Orchestra.
