"Lucky Man" was Emerson, Lake & Palmer's (ELP) first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart stalling at the #48 position in March of 1971 (Whitburn, 2013). ELP were one of the original super groups of the '60s and '70s comprised of Keith Emerson (from The Nice), Greg Lake (from King Crimson) and Carl Palmer (from Atomic Roster & Crazy World of Arthur Brown) (ultimateclassicrock.com, 2021). According to Lake, he wrote the song on an old single stringed guitar when he was 12 years old (songfacts.com, 2021). According to songfacts.com 92021), it was a fluke that the song was ever recorded. When the band completed their first LP, they still needed one more song and no one had written any except Lake, who suggested "Luck Man." Emerson did not like it and left for a pub, but Lake and Palmer decided to record it anyway with many overdubs of guitars and vocals. When Emerson returned, he liked what he heard and suggested he try out this new instrument he obtained called a Moog synthesizer. As he was playing around with it for a part of the ending of the song, everyone loved what he did. His solo is one of the most famous Moog synthesizer solos in recorded rock history.
