Thai demonstrators gather near UN office calling for action against royal insult law

Hundreds of Thai protesters gathered outside the United Nations’ regional headquarters in the capital Bangkok and at two other locations on December 10, 2020. Demonstrators urged the international body to pressure Thailand’s government to repeal the nation’s infamous lèse-majesté law. Under Section 112 of Thailand’s penal code, anyone convicted of defaming, insulting or threatening the king, queen or their heirs faces a sentence of three to 15 years in prison for each count.
