Reference: The main collaborators of Panama's strongman, Brigadier General Omar Torrijos, took advantage last night of his absence from the country to separate him from the command of the national guard, accusing him of exercising too strict control over the governing board. The imprudent coup that deposed Torrijos came at a time when the commander of the national guard, the main armed body of Panama and a decisive factor in his political life, was visiting Mexico. The leaders of the movement were identified as Colonels Ramiro Silvera, who went on to exercise the command of the guard, and Amado Sanjur, rose to the position of assistant commander of 5,000 fighters. Another officer of the guard said that one of the reasons for the fall of Torrijos, was that he allowed two communists to be included in the cabinet and identified such extremists as the head of Labor, Romulo Escobar Betancourt and Juan Materno Vazquez, minister of the Presidency.
