This is the shocking moment an American tourist was arrested after a horrifying racist rant at stunned locals.

Daniel, Franckowiak, 46, began yelling at a young shop assistant then allegedly smashed the building's glass window last Tuesday (November 5) night in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

Locals surrounded the backpacker, from Bismarck, North Dakota, as he spat at them and threatened to ''kill and rape'' the terrified young woman recording him.

In the video, he's heard branding her a ''ch•nk b**ch''.

Following a stand-off for several minutes, two police officers arrived and handcuffed the abusive tourist.

Police said that Franckowiak had been remanded in custody for two nights before being charged with damaging property.

The terrified student, whose shop Franckowiak allegedly attacked, said he refused to apologize or pay for the damages.

She said: ''The police have released him and I'm terrified he will come back and attack me and my mum.“

''We have a food shop and he just came in and started shouting and abusing us. He was aggressive and racist.”

''I don't know what we did wrong. It was unprovoked. He shouted at everybody and said the most horrible things.“

''Everything has been shown to the police so I hope that he will be forced to leave my country and I will be safe again.''

Speaking today, Police Major Ekanit Khajeejitfrom from Chiang Mai police said Franckowiak had been charged with damaging property and was due to appear at the station again on December 12.

The investigating officer added: "Before this incident, there was a complaint that Franckowiak had attacked a Ronald McDonald mannequin at a McDonald's restaurant in the city.

"He looked disturbed and unstable when we arrested him at the scene. He was remanded in custody and charged with the offense of causing damage to property. The video footage from the scene is now being held as evidence and in the process of being investigated by the police team."

According to police records in the U.S., Daniel James Franckowiak was arrested in Burleigh County, North Dakota, on July 7, 2017, and charged with drug offenses.
