Thai fisherman rescued after spending 12 hours at sea

A fisherman who fell overboard during a storm was rescued after spending 12 hours in the water.

Pongporn Preawnoi, 51, slipped and plunged from his trawler off the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan, central Thailand on Monday (November 4) morning.

The Thai Royal Navy battled raging seas to find the stranded fisherman.

The finally found the next morning after he had been treading water 15 miles away from where he had fallen.

Officer rescued him as he was about to lose consciousness.

When he was brought up to the deck he was confused due to the dehydration and his skin was wrinkled after spending half a day in sea water.

The navy gave him first aid and rushed him back to the shore before taking him to hospital.

Navy commander Vice Admiral Luechai Ruddit said that it was an honour to rescue the stranded fisherman.

He said: "I always tell my subordinates that we should prioritise helping people and be proud to take responsibility.

"We want people to trust in the navy and this incident proved that we are ready to help our people when they are in need."
