Zubin Mehta Kashmir concert : Mother of all cultural events ever held in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: As preparations for music conductor Zubin Mehta's Ehsaas-e-Kashmir reach a crescendo, the older generations recall the last time Srinagar witnessed such a cultural feast. The year was 1955, just two years after Stalin's death, with Nikita Khrushchev and Nikolai Bulganin arriving in Jammu & Kashmir to send out a political message: USSR was with India on Kashmir. In welcome of the Russian leaders, the Dal lake was illuminated with floating lamps and caparisoned shikaras floating around. The Soviet leaders were rowed across the Dal with eager people from the banks looking on.
