President Trump has declared that his border wall with Mexico will be built despite agreeing to reopen the government without any additional funding for it.
He tweeted Saturday morning: "21 days goes very quickly. Negotiations with Democrats will start immediately. Will not be easy to make a deal, both parties very dug in. The case for National Security has been greatly enhanced by what has been happening at the Border & through dialogue. We will build the Wall!"
His post echoed a message put out the day before by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
"In 21 days President @realDonaldTrump is moving forward building the wall with or without the Democrats," Sanders wrote. "The only outstanding question is whether the Democrats want something or nothing."
Their insistence about the wall was likely prompted by reports that the president had caved to the Democrats by agreeing to end the record-long partial government shutdown despite his threats to keep it going until they gave him $5.7 billion for the border barrier.
Trump also tried to address the narrative of his seemingly weakened position directly, saying in a tweet: "I wish people would read or listen to my words on the Border Wall. This was in no way a concession. It was taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it's off to the races!"
