Major Gas Leak in Martin Place Sparks Evacuations, Lockdowns in Sydney CBD

A ruptured gas line at Martin Place in Sydney’s central business district saw parts of the area evacuated around 10:30pm on Friday, July 6.Firefighters were still working to shut off the leak at 7:30am on Saturday.Social media users in the area described a foul smell in the area, with one Twitter user calling it “a tidal wave of gas”. Another person told 9news.com.au that the sound of the leak was “deafening”.Sydney Morning Herald reported the leak was caused by night-time construction workers on Castlereagh Street who accidentally breached a high-pressure gas line.NSW Police urged people planning to go into the city on Saturday morning to seek alternate routes.
