My career highlights / knockouts to one of the greatest British boxer and also one the greatest boxer out of Wales, Joe Calzaghe. Known as The Italian Dragon or The Pride of Wales, Calzaghe was renown for his superior hand speed and pinpoint accuracy, as well as his unorthodox southpaw style, combining punching power with unusual angles and high punching output that overwhelmed his 46 opponents with explosive barrage of punches.\r

Joseph William Calzaghe had a stellar amateur boxing career with an outstanding amateur record of 110-10, winning three ABA championships in three divisions in three consecutive years; Welterweight (1991), Light Middleweight (1992) and Middleweight (1993).\r

In the same year of 1993, he made his professional debut as part of the undercard of Lennox Lewis vs Frank Bruno; winning via TKO1 against Paul Hanlon.\r
\r
From then on, Calzaghe continues to rack up victories after victories (most of it via first round TKO) and in his 14th fight he won the vacant British Super Middleweight title against Stephen Wilson via TKO8 in 1995. He successfully defended the title against Mark Delaney via TKO5 in 1996.\r

In 1997, Calzaghe beat the legendary Chris Eubank knocking him down in the first and ten rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory, capturing the vacant WBO Super Middleweight Championship. \r

This is considered to be one of the biggest wins of Calzaghes career. Eubank had only two losses, both to Steve Collins up till that time. Eubank had 14 successful title defenses of his WBO Super Middleweight title before losing it to Collins.\r

Calzaghe considered Chris Eubank to be the toughest fight of his career.\r

Upon winning the WBO title, Calzaghe continues to defend the title a record 21 times (11v via knockouts). In 2006, Calzaghe won the IBF, vacant The Ring and also the vacant lineal Super Middleweight titles against Jeff Left Hook Lacy who was compared to Mike Tyson due to this punching power and was hyped as a huge prospect. Lacy had won the IBF Super Middleweight title againt Syd Vanderpool in 2004 and had four successful defenses before taking on Calzaghe.\r

Lacy was heavily favored going into the fight and Calzaghe had hand problems during that time. However, Calzaghe proved his critics wrong and dominated the entire fight winning by a huge unanimous decision and knocking Lacy down for the first time in his career. It was Lacys 5th defense of his IBF title and Calzaghes 18th defense of his WBO crown.\r

A year later, Calzaghe beat Mikkel Kessler via UD12 to win both the WBC and WBA Super Middleweight titles. In 2008, Calzaghe became a two weight division world champion when he beat the legendary Bernard Hopkins via SD. Calzaghe overcome an early knockdown by Hopkins, using his handspeed and volume punching to outwork Hopkins to triumph over the legend.\r

Calzaghe fought his last fight against 39 year old, and past prime Roy Jones Jr in that same year, winning via unanimous decision. Calzaghe retires after that bout.\r

Notables wins in his career include Robin Reid, Byron Mitchell, Richie Woodhall, Mikkel Kessler, Charles Brewer, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jeff Lacy, Omar Sheika, Sakio Bika, Chris Eubank and Bernard Hopkins. \r

Calzaghe retired with a total record of 46 wins with 32 Knockouts and no losses, making him one of the few world champions in history to retire undefeated. Among such world champions who retired undefeated are Jimmy Barry, Ricardo Lopez, Ji-Won Kim and most recently, Floyd Mayweather Jr.\r
