يُعد الجيش المصري من أقدم الجيوش النظامية في التاريخ، بدأ أول حروبه من أجل توحيد مصر على يد الملك مينا عام 3400 ق.م.، وعلى مدى هذه القرون خاض العديد من الحروب والمعارك الكبرى على مدى العصور بدءاً من العصر الفرعوني ومروراً بالعصور البطلمية والرومانية والإسلامية وحتى العصر الحديث.
وشاركت القوات المسلحة المصرية الحديثة في العديد من الأزمات والحروب منذ الاستقلال ، من الحرب العربية الإسرائيلية عام 1948 ، الثورة المصرية عام 1952 ، أزمة السويس ، الحرب الأهلية في شمال اليمن ، حرب الأيام الستة ، الحرب الأهلية النيجيرية ، حرب الاستنزاف ، حرب يوم الغفران ، أعمال شغب الخبز المصري ، أعمال الشغب التجنيدية المصرية عام 1986 ، الحرب الليبية المصرية ، حرب الخليج ، الحرب على الإرهاب ، الأزمة المصرية ، الحرب الأهلية الليبية الثانية ، الحرب على داعش وتمرد سيناء.
يتنوع تسليح الجيش المصري بين التسليح الشرقي والغربي، حيث يستخدم قطع ومعدات تأتي من عدة دول عن طريق التعاون العسكري المتبادل معها، ومنها الولايات المتحدة وروسيا وفرنسا وإيطاليا وأوكرانيا والصين وبريطانيا، كما يتم تصنيع العديد من المعدات محلياً بالمصانع الحربية المصرية.
و مصر هي واحدة من الدول القليلة في الشرق الأوسط ، والدولة العربية الوحيدة ، التي لديها قمر استطلاعي ، وقد أطلقت آخرًا في مصر في عام 2007 وتحتفل القوات المسلحة المصرية بعيدها يوم 6 أكتوبر من كل عام في ذكرى انتصارات حرب أكتوبر
