Great Work Mine - Leeds Engine House

Great Work Mine was started in 1538 and was on the land of Sir William Godolphin. In just 1548, around 3000 people were working at the mine. The mine was worked by Leeds Engine House, the main and most famous engine house. There was also an East Greatwork Mine but all that is left of the engine house of this mine is just a few stones in a field.
Great Work Mine closed in 1930, after nearly 400 years of mining.
Great Work Mine is between Tregonning Hill and Godolphin Hill and it can be seen for miles around. The chimney of Leeds Engine House can be seen for miles around.
