The government sent its condolences to families whose relatives were involved in a traffic accident that occurred near Kroonstad on Thursday morning. Dikeledi Magadzi said that the accident was unfortunate, especially that happened when the Department of Transportation and its entities and law enforcement agencies spared no efforts to contain road traffic accidents.

"As a country, we are struggling with a large number of traffic accidents, and this one involving a train caught everything by surprise," said Magadzi.

A passenger train traveling from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg collided with a truck at a level crossing near Kroonstad in the Free State province before exploding in flames. Eighteen people are reported dead and more than 180 years were hospitalized in nearby hospitals.

The accident occurred at the crossing of the Jeneva level between Hennenman and Kroonstad 188km from Johannesburg, South Africa

South Africa's passenger railroad (Prasa), the CEO of Mthuthuzeli Swartz, confirmed on Thursday that the death toll was at 18 in the accident that occurred at 9 am Thursday, which he also referred to as " one of the saddest incidents in the history of Metrorail.

Transport Minister Joe Maswangayi, along with the MEC for Police, Roads and Transportation in the Free State, Sam Mashinini, visited the scene on Thursday.

According to a statement from Maswanganyi, preliminary investigations indicate that the derailment was "caused by the truck that hit the level crossing at about 9am this morning."

As it is known, the truck driver crossed the railway line without stopping, causing the accident.
