World AIDS day: Facts about HIV and AIDS HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. What is the difference between
HIV and AIDS? HIV attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells). AIDS is a condition. AIDS develops when HIV has caused serious damage to the immune system. Globally, an estimated 36.7 million people are living with HIV.
At least two million of them are children. There is currently no cure for HIV/AIDS.
However, treatment can control HIV. New HIV infections have fallen by 35% since 2000. To help prevent the spread of HIV:
• Use a condom every time you have sex.
• Get tested and know your partner’s HIV status.
