Trump Jokes: ‘I Never Knew We Had So Many Countries’

President Trump has joked about not knowing how many countries there were in the world until he started receiving congratulatory calls for winning the U.S. election.

President Trump joked on Monday about not knowing how many countries there were in the world until he started receiving congratulatory calls for winning the U.S. election.
He made the comment at a state dinner with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo after talking about some uncertainty in the beginning of their relationship.
"My relationship with Shinzo got off to quite a rocky start because I never ran for office, and here I am. But I never ran, so I wasn't very experienced. And after I had won, everybody was calling me from all over the world. I never knew we had so many countries," Trump told the other dignitaries.
After the apparent joke, a translation of which seemed to make Abe smile, Trump went on to explain that their first meeting in New York had technically violated protocol because former President Obama was in office but said it still turned out "great."
