6 - Mount Roraima, Brazil - A rock mountain formation reaching over 9,000 feet tall marks the border between Brazil, Venezuela and Guyana. The formation could be as old as 70 million years and nobody has ever ventured up due to fear of the bizarre creatures living above. The highest point of this mountain sits high in the sky, above the clouds, making it seem like a dream. Its said to be the inspiration behind Arthur Conan-Doyles The Lost World and the mountain is permanent residence to many never before seen flowers, plants and a type of toad called the Roraima Bush Toad.\r

5 - The Bermuda Triangle, Atlantic Ocean - The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devils Triangle, is a mythical area that exists in the Atlantic Ocean covering 500,000 square miles. The three points that make up the triangle are Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto. Dozens of planes and ships that have entered the waters of this triangle have disappeared, without a trace, and have never been found. More confounding is that a lot of these disappearances have occurred during good weather and none have radioed any distress messages. And yet many planes and ships navigate the area every day without incident. The area first gained notoriety in 1918 when the USS Cyclops, a 542 foot long navy cargo ship sank, claiming the lives of over 300 men. In 1941, two more cargo ships similarly disappeared without a trace along the same route. \r

4 - Longyearbyen, Norway - Longyearbyen, which translates to The Longyear Town, is a town in Norway which holds the claim to fame of being the worlds northernmost settlement, with over one thousand permanent residents. The town is named after American industrialist John Longyear, whos Arctic Coal Company founded the town when they began their coal mining operations in 1906. Coal operations were turned over to a Norwegian company after World War I, which still operates the mine today. The town was nearly completely destroyed during World War II, when two battleships attacked and destroyed all but 4 buildings, but it was rebuilt after the conclusion of the war.\r

3 - Richat Structure, Mauritania - The Richat Structure, also known as the Eye of the Sahara, is a unique circular formation in the Sahara desert with a diameter of almost 30 miles. Erosion has revealed different types of sedimentary rock layers of quartzite. The structure was initially thought to be the crater left from an asteroid crash, due to its high degree of circularity, however due to a lack of a depression, geologists now think it is a highly eroded geologic dome. As geologic domes erode, they creates concentric rings of strata, with the youngest rock layers at the outside and the oldest in the center. When viewed from above, this structure takes on the shape of a bullseye. \r

2 – Pamukkale, Turkey - Pamukkale, which translates to “cotton castle” is a World Heritage Site in Turkey which contains some very unique thermal pools. The water flows from the underground springs across vast natural shelves made of travertine. In some areas the water flows down the travertine, like steps. Underground volcanic ivity created the hot springs and the water in the hot springs also carries calcium carbonate and carbon dioxide with it to the surface. As the carbon dioxide in the water de-gasses into the atmosphere, the calcium carbonate in the water is deposited as the water travels along its path. This calcium carbonate then hardens and turns into travertine, which encases anything the water crosses. Seen from afar, it appears as if ice has covered the rocks and shelves.\r

1 - Magnetic Hill, New Brunswick - Magnetic Hill in Moncton, New Brunswick creates an optical illusion for drivers. It is a type of gravity hill in which the rising and falling terrain make it appear that you are going uphill while gravity is pulling you downhill. It features one point at the base of a ridge in which drivers must accelerate to prevent rolling backwards, even though it appears you are rolling uphill. People have often observed that water in the drainage ditches flanking the road also appears to run uphill. Today it has become a tourist attrion where drivers must pay a fee to experience the effect of Magnetic Hill.\r
