Giant Panda Gives Birth To Twins

by Jonathan SangerLin Bing, a Thai-born giant panda, gave birth to twin panda cubs on July 8, and the staff at China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas couldn’t be more thrilled.The panda cubs each weighed less than a pound at birth but now they’ve nearly doubled in weight.Nature isn’t normally kind to panda twins. When giving birth to twins, a mother panda will normally raise only the stronger infant and abandon the weaker cub. However, the keepers at the conservation leave one cub with their mother at a time while the other is bottle fed, allowing both to get quality time.“We exchange the cubs on a regular basis, allowing each of them to enjoy their mother’s warmth in turn,” said Wang Chengdong, an expert of the center. “At the beginning, the frequency is higher. When they both turn one or two months old, we may give the pair back to their mother. In this way they will both benefit from her interaction.”While the team say the cubs are doing great, they most likely will not be ready to meet the public until they are at least six months old.
